Open Discussion: Server Resets
Open Discussion: Server Resets
As we're well aware of from elsewhere, long-running NWN servers run into difficulties with things going weird.
I would propose when we do have this thing going, we have resets at some sort of regular interval so that we mitigate these issues.
What do you all think?

Re: Open Discussion: Server Resets
Automated 24 hour reset as a baseline seems the way to go, in my opinion. Can you maintain a server for longer, without issues? Probably, yes, especially at a smaller scale. But having the server restart once at the lowest tide point when it's least disruptive seems worth doing, relative to the negative impacts.
If more than that is needed such as manual restarts because of specific issues, that'd be a future concern to look at. But one that I honestly don't expect to be relevant.

Re: Open Discussion: Server Resets
Honestly I think that any problems with regular resets, so long as people know they're coming, are ameliorated with persisting constructions/etc across resets, but it still bears consideration until we can do so.
That said there's probably more allowance for jankiness with resets as we're first starting out, too.

Re: Open Discussion: Server Resets
I'd push the limit a bit to start with and have it happen every 72 hours. Can always reduce it if server stability falls faster than anticipated but from experience that seems to be the point at which stuff starts to break down.

Re: Open Discussion: Server Resets
Yeah I think every 2-3 days is fine, at a regular, given time.
We can probably get away with weekly if our scripts have enough self-correction in them for the timekeeping.
I am somewhat of the opinion that doing these at a regular, set, predictable interval is better than having times where it ends up reset in the middle of a scene or something and disrupts ongoing roleplay.

Think I'm going to settle on every Thursday in the early AM eastern. From observing numbers on other big servers (POTM, Sigil, Arelith, etc), that seems like the lowest population time.
