Open Discussion: Pickpocketing

Post by wilkins1952 »

This is specifically regarding the pickpocketing skill. Personally I'm of the mind to disable it as an active skill entirely. For one it's very broken and can steal anything not plot marked from a targets inventory with only a DC30 check that is hard coded. This means keys/Plot/Faction items or even things such as armor and clothing. Against NPCs it does much the same and has the downside of even if you are visible and pickpocket NPCs don't consider it a hostile act.

However I do think keeping it as an RP centric skill is useful and allowing people to roll it against NPCs with DM overview or against PCs with the other PC then agreeing what to hand over.

It is only really fixable by reimplementing entirely, ie, making a new "real" pickpocketing skill and disabling the game's. I'd be in favour of disabling the built in one and when we get to it, just remaking it in a way that we find more tenable.

Yeah remaking it entirely eventually would be nice, Though I'd consider that a luxury feature to have at some point in the future.

I would remake it so the Pickpocketable trait actually matters on inventory items - it doesnt presently - and so that it can only target NPCs, since pickpocketing (mechanically anyways) from PCs is just going to run into griefing and issues.

I agree though, its a future goal, not something we need right now.
