Open Discussion: Anchorite of the Mists Prestige Class Addition

Post by Maiyannah »

Presented in Van Richten's Arsenel, the Anchorite of the Mists is a prestiege class catering to divine spellcasters of Ezra.
The Anchorite of the Mists is one of the most common prestiege classes in Ravenloft, given the Ezran church is front and foremost among the native religions of the Core, as such, it would seem remiss of us not to have the prestiege class. As such, I want to adapt it to NWN.

Firstly, the class is described as follows:
Among the clerics of Ezra, a handful of resolute souls have sought to tap into the Goddess’ mystical connection to the Mists. Such anchorites of the Mists are respected for their divine might and their unrivaled command of the Mists themselves. These mystics unnerve their fellow clerics at times, however. Who knows what fate may befall a mortal who presumes to possess the spiritual strength of a goddess? Who knows what risks may be taken when such a soul recklessly courts the dread power of the Mists themselves? Still, many in the Church of Ezra’s leadership are counted among the anchorites of the Mists, including Bastion Joan Secousse, the aged founder of the Church’s neutral sect.
Due to the class’ requirements, all anchorites of the Mists are clerics or inquisitors of Ezra. Many anchorites of the Mists also have a few levels of sorcerer or wizard, believing that an understanding of arcane magic is crucial in penetrating the mysteries of their deity.
I would structure the prestiege class as so:

Requirements
Alignment: Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, Neutral, Neutral Good, or Lawful Evil *
Deity: Ezra
Feats: Iron Will, Skill Focus (Concentration)
Skills: Persuade 4, Occultism 8, Religion 8 [1]
Spellcasting: Ability to cast divine spells of 3rd level or higher.
Special: Must have the Mists domain

Class Skills
Concentration, Heal, Persuade, Occultism, Religion, Sense Motive, Spellcraft [2]
Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int

Class Features
Weapon And Armour Proficiency: No additional
Spells Per Day: Anchorites of Ezra continue to gain spells per day for their existing cleric/divine spellcasting class in the same way that Pale Masters gain additional arcane levels.
Blind-Fight: At level 1 an Anchorite of the Mists gains Blind-Fight for free [3]
Mists Navigation (Su): This one is going to be reliant on how we code the mistways, but the idea is that the mistways shift significantly less when an Anchorite of the Mists is navigating them.
Veil of the Mists (Su): At 2nd Level, an Anchorite of the Mists can use nondetection once per day, as a sorcerer equal to the primary divine spellecasting level (including the advanced Anchorite of the Mists level).
Turn Mist Creatures (Su): At 3rd Level, an Anchorite of the mists can turn creatures with the Mists descriptor as a cleric turns undead. Their level is considered equal to their divine spellcasting level including their Anchorite of the mist levels.
Mists Fugue (Su): At 4th level, an anchorite of the Mists can use confusion once per day, as a sorcerer with a level equal to the character’s primary divine spellcasting level plus his anchorite of the Mists level. Mists creatures and darklords are immune to this ability.
Mists Stride (Su): At 5th level, an anchorite of the Mists can use dimension door once per day, as a sorcerer with a level equal to the character’s primary divine spellcasting level plus his anchorite of the Mists level. At 7th level, he can use this ability twice per day, and at 9th level he can use it three times per day.
Blindsight (Su): At 6th level, an anchorite of the Mists gains the blindsight special quality with a range of 30 feet.
Truce of the Mists (Ex): At 7th level, an anchorite of the Mists is protected from creatures with the Mists descriptor as long as he takes no actions against them. Mists creatures may not attack the anchorite of the Mists or target him with spells or spell-like or supernatural abilities, so long as the character refrains from attacking them in kind. This ability is similar to the sanctuary spell, save that the creatures are not allowed a Will save to attack normally, and the effect’s duration is permanent until broken by the character.
Mists Oubliette (Su):At 8th level, an anchorite of the Mists can use maze once per day, as a sorcerer with a level equal to the character’s primary divine spellcasting level plus his anchorite of the Mists level. Mists creatures and darklords are immune to this ability. [4]
Shroud of the Mists (Su): At 10th level, an anchorite of the Mists can use mind blank once per day, as a sorcerer with a level equal to the character’s primary divine level plus his anchorite of the Mists level.

Notes/changes:

1: Religion and Occultism are combining a bunch of Knowledge skills needed in the original.
2: As above, for their clas skills.
3: I might give them a free feat choice if they already have blindfight, most people will. If I can
4: We will need to come up with an idea other than Maze for this, since its not in NWN

I think Maze as a spell will be somewhat easy to implement. The only part that gives me a little concern is Truce of the Mists, I think perhaps giving that a DC will check that is Wisdom+CL is perhaps best. Other than that I think it's a fine addition and I'd say keeping Blindfight as a free feat is not even a bad idea.

The idea of Truce is that mist creatures aren't immediately aggro with them unless attacked. We can easily do this by making the PC neutral to a "Mist critters" faction (though maybe not named that ;) )

First implementation of this will be in 0.1.22
It is not complete, and it probably has a bunch of bugs, but it's a starting point!

The requireements, class spell progression, and a few of the special abilities, are in there.

Specifically, Blind Fight, Veil of the Mists, Mists Fugue, Mists Stride, and Blindsight will be implemented.

Mists Navigation and Mists Oubliette are still pending.

The class has been changed in two ways to make concessions:
1] There will be no alignment penalty, instead, you will need to be in the Church of Ezra faction. If you are removed from it, you will not lose abilities, like a fallen paladin, but you will no longer be able to progress further.

There is the potential to fall from this class if you foresake Ezra, but it is a class of Hers, and not of the temporal church. This will only happen through RP / DM intervention, or at the specific request of the player.
